Meteorological Balloons Employed to Illegally Transport Tobacco Products Closed Airport in Lithuania
Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
