Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
