Youth Found Deceased Following Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage youth was found dead only a few days after being falsely blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a dead infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's parents discovered his body in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Begin
The investigation learned how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, claiming her infant's remains had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later determined the alleged break-in victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the property was not taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged stolen ashes generated social media comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Impact
She added that her son had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at home, but nothing was found. He was taken to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her child told her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that a young adult encouraged the teenager to end his life.
She had no concerns on the evening before he died, describing how she had heard him "laughing and joking".
She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The hearing received testimony from educational staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the educator said she called the family's family landline and left a voicemail saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they never got that message.
Formal Conclusion
Lead coroner told the hearing he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was released while investigations continued."
The coroner determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or failures of any organization led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal act it is impossible to discern his intent."
